Freelance Writing Marketing Tips You Need to Use

Improve your success with freelance writing marketing tips.

If you want better paying clients, you need to market your business. You need to prove you’re worth the better pay and contact the right type of clients. That doesn’t mean you have to do the things you hate.

I hate cold calling but I don’t mind cold emailing. If I had to cold call all the time, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Here are my freelance writing marketing tips to find the better clients.

Network In-Person at Events

Go to various writing events. It could be a blogger event, classes for being a better writer or other business events. Make sure you have your business cards to hand and network with the people there.

It’s often not what you know but who you know. Many of my UK clients have come from referrals. It’s limited the amount of hunting around I’ve had to do.

The best thing is these events become fun. Writing can be so isolating and unsociable at times. You feel like you’re sacrificing your life for money. It doesn’t have to be that way, which makes this one of my favourite freelance writing marketing tips.

Hold Seminars to Get Your Name Out

Hold a seminar to market yourself. This is one of the best freelance writing marketing tips because it’s a practical form of marketing. You’re helping others, so they will be more receptive to what you have to say, and you can do it from your home.

A seminar can be in person but you can cut the cost by holding a webinar. These are usually done over Skype or other similar software. You can make them free for people to attend and sell something within it or charge for people to attend to gain income as well as marketing!

However, make sure you have something valuable. Have you made a certain amount of money through guest blogging? Are you an expert in your niche and have something to teach others? If you hold it for the sake of it, it becomes the worst thing you could do!

Hold a Contest and Offer Free Consultation or Web Copy Work

There are tons of people who need help with their web copy or to make more money. You can get a list of all their details by hosting a contest. It could be for the worst website or the person who needs the most help.

People will find you through the contest and submit their details. You can then offer the winner the prize but can contact all the others by the details they leave. You could soon end up with enough work for the year just by this marketing tip.

A Press Release as the Most Effective Freelance Writing Marketing Tips

Press releases are extremely effective, when written correctly. If you’ve never written on before, find out how to do it and practise until it is good!

Press releases are really effective freelance writing marketing tips because they show your skills while telling people that you’re there. You could share that you’ve started a new website or offer a new service.

Business newspapers usually have spaces for these forms of marketing. Check them out to get an idea and then get yours in there.

What freelance writing marketing tips have you used in the past? Feel free to share the ones that have worked or haven’t turned out so fruitful. Are you planning on using any of these in the future? Come back and let me know how they turn out.

    1. It is very easy to get out of practise; since having a little one, I admit I’m out of practise with networking. But there’s no time like the present than getting back on the horse and getting yourself out there.

  1. I love these marketing ideas. Though I’m a time strategy visionary, not a writer, I feel these ideas would work to market many businesses.

I’d love to know more about holding a contest. How do you recommend getting the word out about your contest? (Especially if your current email/social media/blog following isn’t very large yet?)

    Thanks for the great post!

    1. You’re right, Lisa — the probably will work for many businesses. My blog is for writing though, which is why I focus on that.

A contest would work really well with networking. Maybe you could offer a guest post about it on someone else’s blog (or a guest post about your niche and ask for a link back to your contest). You could also ask others within your niche to send it out through their email list. I’ve subscribed to a few bloggers’ lists and see this sort of networking happen a lot.

      You’re welcome!
