Pinterest has changed considerably and has been on an account suspension binge. Is it time to give it up in your social media marketing strategy?
When you hear the success other business owners have with a social media platform, the instant thing to do is jump on it. Pinterest has been a great option for many years. In fact, there are a lot of business owners promoting Pinterest courses to help you make the most of this marketing platform.
Things are changing, though. Pinterest has been shutting a lot of accounts down for “spam.” The accounts haven’t actually been spamming. It’s more of a change in the way Pinterest is doing things. Sometimes, it’s an error in the overzealous bots, but sometimes it’s a case of rules changing and people not paying attention.
Then there’s news that Pinterest wants to keep people on its own platform. That’s not surprising, but it means those who want to use it to take people to their own blogs or websites aren’t going to find a lot of luck. So, is it time to give up on this platform for your social media marketing?
Make sure you diversity your social media marketing
The best thing you can do is diversify your options. This doesn’t mean getting rid of Pinterest. In fact, it means the opposite.
You want to focus on multiple ways to bring in the views to your blog or the potential customers to your website. This means having Pinterest, but not focusing on it solely.
The same applies to all types of social media marketing. The same even applies to SEO.
I’ve always focused on SEO. It was the one thing I did from the very beginning of blogging, and I’ve added in the social media around that. I take time to study the different platforms to work with each one, and I make sure I’m working smartly by being where my target audience is.
If my target audience isn’t on Pinterest then I’m not going to use it. If it isn’t on Facebook, then I’m not going to use it. There’s no point in being where your time is wasted. However, if you have an audience on Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter, or other platforms, you want to spend some time working on them.
And don’t forget SEO. This is essential. It’s probably where the majority of your traffic is going to come from without doing a lot of work after the fact unless there’s a big algorithm change.
Always have your own email list
One thing you’ll want to focus on right now is not social media marketing. Yes, you want to do it, but you also need to work on growing your email list.
Pinterest, Google, Facebook…they all have something in common. You don’t own them. That means you don’t get a say in what changes are made to algorithms. You don’t get control over whether your accounts get shut down or not. And what happens if you lose your Pinterest where all your followers were?
With an email list, you have direct access to your followers and your potential customers. You have the ability to get in touch with them should something happen to one of your social media platforms. This is why it’s such a necessary component of growing your business.
This isn’t to say social media marketing is dead. It really isn’t. You just want to diversify.
