Are you suddenly single? This can seem devastating at first, but I love it! Here are my five ways to make the most of being single.

Being suddenly single can be a bit of a shell shock. That’s especially true if you’ve spent the last decade or so with someone else. It can be even harder if that someone else has left you for another person.

You can end up questioning your self-worth. You start to wonder if dating is even the same anymore. And you know you’ve heard all the horror stories and wonder if you really want to go that route.

I started out dating, but I started to realize that I love my own company. So, I decided it was time to make the most of being single, and this is what I’ve done instead.

Nurture your friendships and make new ones

It’s time to spend time with your friends. They can help you get through a breakup. Just look at the series Dollface*.

You may need to show friends that you do want to be back in their lives. If you walked away from them for a relationship, they may not want to immediately invite you back into the friendship group. Again, Dollface will help you with that.

What if you don’t have any friends? I found myself with nobody in the city that I was in, so I jumped on Bumble’s BFF finder to start with. Eventually, I found a group on Facebook for my local area that was started by a repat, and that’s led to another friendship group.

I’ve spent time nurturing friendships with people. Some haven’t worked out for long, while others are still going. It’s all about putting in some effort and finding your tribe.

Make the most of being single with a hobby

Have you always wanted to cook more? Maybe you’ve wanted to take up that photography hobby? Being single is a great time to take up a new hobby. After all, you have a little more time when you’re single*.

This doesn’t have to cost a lot of money. You could opt for a hobby like writing or graphic design. Maybe you want to do something simple like learning how to knit, or maybe you just want to read more. Whatever it is, now is the time to do it.

I decided to take up baking again. It was something I used to love to do. I’ve also started to add in cooking dishes as well.

Get to the gym for yourself

I got a gym membership after I realized I needed to make the most of being single. This was essential for me as I needed to get back into the swimming pool. That is my happy place.

Don’t go to the gym for other people. You don’t want to get into an exercise routine that some guy on Tinder says you need. This is something to do for yourself.

Find the routine that works for you as well. The benefit of being single is that you get to decide when you head to the gym. If you want to do that at 2 a.m. when nobody else is there, go for it!

Make the most of being single by vacationing

You can go on vacations by yourself. I adore traveling by myself. There is nobody else that I need to think about when it comes to destinations, places to eat, things to do, and more. I get to be selfish in my travels and only think about what I want to do.

You may find a new side to yourself when you travel alone. And you don’t need to be completely alone. There are a few groups where people book on their own but travel with others. This can help offer a “safety in numbers” feel, but you are all still individual people with your own plans.

Of course, you can also vacation with friends*. That’s something you may have stopped doing while being in a relationship. Now is a good time to look at doing that again.

Focus on your career aspirations

There is nobody else to think about when you’re single. You get to make decisions for yourself without considering what your spouse may think. If you want to go back to school, this could be a great time to do that. You never know who you’re going to meet!

Want to get a promotion at work? When you’re single, you may finally have the time to put in the effort to get that promotion. You only have you to think about when you get home from work late. There’s no need to explain yourself when you are hours late because nobody is projecting their affair onto you.

Follow your dreams and your passions. Focus on that career growth if you want or change your career if you desire. The world is your oyster, so make the most of it.
