Just because you’re in a relationship doesn’t mean you need to spend every waking hour with your partner. You need to make time for yourself.

A lot of people make the mistake in a new relationship by spending time with just their new partner*. It’s an easy mistake to fall into.

You’re happy with that person, and you want to spend time with them. You may want to get to know them better, or you just enjoy exploring things they like and sharing what you like. The problem is you can end up forgetting about your friends, your family, and even yourself.

It’s important to make time for yourself when you’re in a relationship*. This applies at the start of a new relationship and when it’s a serious one. A good partner isn’t going to force you not to see your friends—if you’re with someone who does, that’s a red flag.

Make time for yourself to recharge

You need to have some alone time. You can’t be around people 24/7. This just leads to you constantly having to be “on” for someone.

Plus, there are times that you just need someone else to talk to. You need someone who enjoys doing things your partner doesn’t. Other friends are amazing.

Make time for yourself to focus on your own interests

Your partner isn’t going to like everything you do, and vice versa. You both need your own hobbies. Some of those hobbies will be out of the house, while others will be inside. It doesn’t matter where they are; all that matters is that you take part in them.

We all have our flaws. We have insecurities, trauma from the past, some selfish qualities to us. There are things that we need to change for ourselves—not for a partner, but changing for ourselves will help our relationships.

When you make time for yourself, you have a chance to grow as a person. You can see where your flaws are and find ways to improve them. If you’re struggling with something in particular, you could take classes or find a therapist.

Some of these things, you don’t want to do with a partner*. You want to work on your first.

You learn to spend time alone

Not everyone likes to be alone. There are a lot of people out there who will surround themselves with people, whether it’s online or in person. They will need to be social and hear from friends just to fill a void.

When you make time for yourself in a relationship, you have the chance to spend some time alone. This is a great opportunity to learn what you love about yourself. You can figure out how you can be comfortable in silence.

This tends to make relationships healthier. You’re not with someone specifically to fill a void. You’re with them because you want to be with them, and vice versa.
