Quality Work for Low Pay: Why It’s Hard to Find

Make sure you get the high quality work you deserve.

Many business owners who hire writers complain that they can’t find the best quality work. This is often (not always!) because they are looking in the wrong places or want quality work for low pay.

There are some writers out there willing to work for a small amount—at first—but those high quality writers go on to raise their prices and find higher paying clients.

If you’re not willing to pay more, you may find yourself with less than average work. Here’s some of the reasons why.

It Takes Time to Write Quality Pieces

Quality work for low pay usually means a low hourly rate for the writer. Paying $10 for a 500 word piece, usually means that the writer is on $10 or less an hour. It may sound like enough but most of the time is isn’t.

You need to remember that writers, mainly freelancers, have a lot of outgoing costs to pay, so their hourly rate needs to be higher than a normal employee (who doesn’t have business costs to pay).

To increase the hourly rate, freelance writers will look for ways to cut corners. It may mean finding one piece and copying it, skipping on the proofreading or just writing mediocre pieces. It won’t be the quality that you want for your work.

If you want quality, you need to think about the hourly rate for the writer. That usually means paying more for your 500 word articles or blog posts.

The Work from ESL Writers

ESL stands for English as a Second Language. There are plenty of ESL writers out there and I’m not going to say they’re all bad—there are some that have a better grasp of the English language than some native speakers!

If you want cheap work, you’re usually going to hire a non-native writer. That may work out for you and you may find a great writer but that isn’t always the case. The good think about non-native writers is that their cost of living is generally lower, meaning they don’t need the higher pay. However, we move onto the bad.

Some ESL writers won’t get a real grasp of the English language and you’ll spend more money fixing their mistakes. It would have been better hiring someone worth more than trying to get quality work for low pay.

Not Getting the Experience for Quality Work for Low Pay

When you choose to pay less, you run the risk of hiring someone without much experience. This could mean the difference between getting on the top spot of Google and having your website blacklisted from the search engine.

Experienced writers will charge more for that experience. They know how important quality is. They know all about Google and its algorithms. They know where to research for quality and reputable information.

These are skills that come with time in the field.

You may even get the specialised experience. For example, I often charge more for technology articles because I have a degree in that subject. At the same time, I’ve become experienced in beauty and fashion, which allows me to charge more for that than on a topic that I don’t have as much experience in.

Hiring someone with little experience means you’re not likely to get the quality work for low pay.

Do you get quality work for low pay? Maybe you have a horror story of getting very bad work for something you thought was a great deal. Feel free to share your experiences in the comments below! I’d love to hear your side.
