Being a WAHM is tough. You need to make time for yourself and your family, and that means you need to step away from work. It’s easy to overlook this need, though.
When I first started out freelance writing, I would work for hours on end. I wouldn’t take a break, even if my head was screaming at me to get a drink, and I’d work seven days a week, 28-31 days a month (depending on the month) if I could.
I didn’t have kids at first, but then as kids were thrown into the mix, things got harder. I was trying to be everything to everyone.
It wasn’t good for me and I knew it. But I had so much to do!
I ended up burnt out. One day my arms refused to let me type and my head was pounding so much that I could barely look at the screen. I suffered from eye strain. I didn’t want to put the effort in for my clients, and I just wanted shut up shop for the day.
I realized then just how important it was to step away from work now and then.
You need to take breaks throughout the week. You also need to take breaks throughout the day. It doesn’t matter what you do as a WAHM*. Here’s why you need to step away from work.
Stepping away is a chance to recover and relax
Every WAHM needs to relax and recover. If you were employed, you would have at least one day off a week. Unless you were doing voluntary overtime, you would probably get two days off a week. This will depend on your country and industry, but you do get time off.
Everyone needs a day or two off work. It’s a time to enjoy the money we earn and a chance to do stuff that we want to do, instead of the stuff that we have to do.
I’ve found the time off helps my brain relax, which aids my creativity. My muscles get a break from all the typing, and my body gets the exercise that it really needs. Some days I’ll just sleep. Other days, I’ll get out and enjoy the fresh air and spend time with the kids. It depends on what my body needs at the time.
Step away from work to be with family and friends
You don’t necessarily need a whole day off work. You just need to step away from work for a few hours in the evening before you go to bed. This is time to spend with your family and friends.
Taking a day off here and there is also important. You’ll want to make days where you don’t have to think about the tasks at hand and you can enjoy some free time.
I don’t have my kids around me all the time anymore. One of the benefits of being separated is that I have a couple of days a week where I can just work. Then when the kids are home, I can dedicate more time with them.
Boost your creativity in your business
I’ve already mentioned that a day off helps boost my creativity, but taking regular breaks away from the computer is a must.
I want you to think about this carefully: how often have you come up with great ideas sitting in front of your computer? Chances are very few. I’ve had the odd one or two, usually linked to something that I’m currently doing, but the majority of my ideas have come when I’m doing something else.
Ideas come in the shower, while washing up, while walking the dogs, and even when I’m reading a book.
So, it’s time to take a step away from the computer. Give your brain and body the rest they need and boost your creativity levels.
To end my story, after I had a week off to recover from the burnout, I made a change to my schedule. I started taking at least one day off a week (and Sunday has always been a must since) and then planned regular weeks off.
I then started adding more time off. I take two weeks off in the summer to do nothing. I take the whole of Christmas week off. I even try to take off some of the major holidays (even Canadian Thanksgiving even though I don’t actually celebrate it).
I now look forward to the ability to step away from work. And so do my kids!
