5 Tips to get started again after the holidays

Whatever you do as a work-at-home mom, you’ll find after the holidays weird and slow. Here are my top tips to get started again.

You may have taken some time off over the holiday season. Who doesn’t want to spend that time with family, and wasn’t that one of the reasons you became a work-at-home mom in the first place? Isn’t that the reason to turn your side hustles into full-time hustles?

Of course it was! The problem is when you need to get started again after the holidays. How do you get back into the swing of things?

I’ve been doing this for years now. The New Year start is the one I look forward to the most, but it used to be very difficult to get back into. Here are my top five tips to make it possible.

5 ways to get started again whatever your job or business is

There are some things that I’ll do before I go back to work properly. I’ll spend a couple of nights around Dec. 28 and Dec. 29 setting some goals. Don’t worry if you haven’t done that to get started now. Just keep in mind that it’s worth doing before you do go back to work.

But I get it. This is the first time. Or maybe this is just the first time you’re struggling. So, let’s dive into the five tips.

  1. Set your SMART goals for the first month: I don’t set big goals for the whole year. I focus on 30- and 90-day goals. The first 30 days are important, so you want to set some clear goals that you want to achieve. Make them SMART to help you keep track of your progress.
  2. Do your word for the year: I like to have a clear view of what I want to achieve in the year. It’s not a goal, but more of an intention to get started. I have a word of the year. For 2023, I’ve picked resurgence. The last couple of years have been hard for me, especially when it comes to my work, but I want to see my business succeed, so that’s what I’m focused on.
  3. Set a timer for work: If you’re struggling to get started again, you may want to set a timer. I still do this when I’m having bad days, such as when my anxiety is high. I’ll set a timer to just do 10 minutes of work if I’m having a really bad day and then take a break. Most of the time, my timer will be set to do at least 20 minutes of work. If the timer goes off and I’m in the swing of something, I’ll keep going until I get the need to move away. It also helps with just plain procrastination.
  4. Get the hardest jobs out of the way: I have some work that I just don’t enjoy as much as others. So, I’ll get that work done first. It’s best to get it out of the way instead of constantly looking at my diary to get it done later. Later doesn’t happen if I don’t intentionally do it. Once it’s out of the way for the day, I’ll find that the rest of the day is much smoother.
  5. Get a boost of serotonin on a morning: I don’t care how you do it, but you want to get a boost of the positive hormones. I like to do a 15-minute workout, whether it’s walking the dogs or doing a home workout on the days the dogs are with my ex. You’ll have your own ways to get your serotonin boost. Don’t doom scroll on a morning. Do something intentionally to get you in a happier mood before you sit down to work.
