ABC Has Just Renewed 3 of its Primetime Lineup (and I’m Not Surprised)

There are some decisions made by networks that are no surprise at all. ABC’s recent decision to renew three of its primetime shows is one of those cases.

We are at that time of year when the renewals and cancellations start to come in. What is surprising is that ABC’s longest-running series hasn’t been renewed yet. While I don’t think it will be cancelled, I just know that this is likely to be the final season — and there are a lot of things to work out before a renewal comes through with that in mind.

HIGH POTENTIAL – “In The Driver’s Seat” – Disney/Mitch Haaseth

High Potential Season 3 Is Officially Happening

Let’s get into the renewals that are happening. The first is High Potential, which will return for a third season. This comes as no surprise, as it remains one of the top shows on the network while also performing well in the streaming numbers.

There is a caveat to this renewal, though. Todd Harthan will leave as showrunner since he wants to focus on Eragon, a new series where he will serve as co-creator and co-showrunner.

That means a new showrunner, and this could be good or bad. It’s hard to tell.

To be honest, High Potential has had a problem with sidelining its supporting characters. A change of showrunner could be good, as it could allow for someone to realize where the downsides are.

9-1-1: NASHVILLE: “Good Southern Manors” – Disney/Jake Giles Netter

9-1-1 and 9-1-1: Nashville Have Both Landed Renewals at ABC

The other two renewals are for Thursday night dramas. 9-1-1 Season 10 and 9-1-1: Nashville Season 2 will officially happen, and we’re sure to see them both kick-off TGIT once again.

The renewal of 9-1-1 isn’t surprising as it remains one of the top performers on the network. It does have a large cast that is likely not cheap to hire, but the viewing figures are sure to help support the renewal decisions.

9-1-1: NASHVILLE: “Good Southern Manors” – Disney/Jake Giles Netter

There is a little bit of surprise about 9-1-1: Nashville, but that’s more to do with the linear views. This spinoff isn’t as good as the original series — or as good as 9-1-1: Lone Star — but it’s part of a huge franchise and it’s not surprising that Disney (and ABC) wants to keep it going. I just hope we get more focus on the supporting characters rather than the Hart family all the time!

The one show I’m waiting patiently to be renewed now is Will Trent, which I can almost guarantee will happen. The show has gone from strength-to-strength each season, and there’s no doubt that people are tuning in.
