We’ve just started another drought. House of the Dragon Season 3 has come to an end, and now all eyes are on when the fourth and final season of the series will premiere.
Yes, this is the final season of the Game of Thrones prequel. There were plans from the beginning to end around this point, although showrunner Ryan Condal did rethink things at one point in case he needed more time to wrap up the story.
To be honest, it’s best to end it. The second and third seasons have both had problems with pacing, starting strong and then limping to the end. At least House of the Dragon Season 3 ended with a major battle!
House of the Dragon Season 4 Sets Its Sights on 2028
The bad news is that we have a fair bit of a wait on our hands. House of the Dragon* Season 4 is slated for the 2028 TV season.
That’s not all too surprising. It’s taking two years for each season to get through all stages of production. The first season premiered in August 2022, and the second season arrived in June 2024. It then took until June 2026 for the third season.
So, we’re looking at some time in the summer of 2028. If everything goes to plan, it’s possible that we’ll get another June release date, but August should certainly be possible.
Filming Starts in 2027
Production on the series won’t start until early next year. There are still some pre-production processes to go through, as post-production for a season runs all the way up to the release date. That’s not uncommon for a show that is released weekly, and it’s one of the things that I like. It means we start episodes sooner than we would have to wait if it were a binge-watch.
With filming starting in early 2027 and it likely taking around eight to 10 months for the eight episodes to film, it will still mean that a summer 2028 release date is possible.
The good news is that there is some Game of Thrones* content to look forward to before then. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms* Season 2 is slated to arrive in the first half of 2027, with filming just recently wrapping up.
