Is Call the Midwife Getting Ready to End the Series?

Call the Midwife

With all the changes that are being threatened on Nonnatus House, it feels like Call the Midwife is getting ready to end. After all, is there a way forward without Nonnatus House being front and center?

The good news for those who are worried is that Call the Midwife Season 16 is officially confirmed. The BBC wants to keep this show on the air, so that means this 15th season isn’t the end. However, it could mean some substantial changes to work with the time period.

Call the Midwife Season 16 Is Delayed

In some bad news, it’s unlikely that we’ll get Call the Midwife Season 16 in 2027. Production has been put on pause, and it probably won’t start up again until next year, which pushes the season potentially into 2028.

This isn’t a problem with the show, though. The pause in production is due to the movie that is expected. A feature film is expected to be set in 1972, which is the year that we’re coming into during Season 15. It’s set to bridge the gap to the next season, which hints that we could also see a time jump of sorts.

Changes Are Afoot in the NHS

Call the Midwife has always followed real historical events. It’s something that has arguably helped to keep the series on the air, and that means that we’re sure to see changes as the story continues.

Call the Midwife Season 15 has already set the stage for changes. The NHS is going through some substantial changes, which happened in real history, and it will likely mean a huge change for Nonnatus House in the following season. The show will likely move away from the traditional district nursing model that it has always followed. Instead, there will be GP practices or a small community hospital.

This means a change of the cast. We are going to lose characters, and I don’t want to give too much away. Those who have watched via PBS Passport or in the UK will already know of some of the changes, but if you don’t want to be spoiled, I’ll leave some of the big decisions out of this.

There is a Call the Midwife Prequel Series In the Works

The great news is that there is more to come from this universe. A prequel series is also planned, which is set to take place during the early beginnings of Nonnatus House.

It was set up during World War II, and that means bringing storylines of how the nuns and midwives helped the community during the bombings and the terror. There have been mentions of the adrenaline that they felt at times throughout the series, so it’ll be exciting to see younger versions of our favorite characters in the thick of it.

For now, we can continue watching Season 15 knowing that it definitely isn’t the last. However, there are some changes to come.

Call the Midwife airs on Sundays at 8/7c on PBS.
