Grey’s Anatomy Losing Two Main Cast Members Could Be Great for the Story

Grey's Anatomy

I am all for TV shows lasting as long as they need to. Grey’s Anatomy has arguably gone on a little too long, but the cancellation of the show means hundreds of jobs being lost, and that’s something that always plays in my head.

That being said, the show needs to still have soem good quality storylines, and right now, things have become stale. The character arcs are the same thing over and over again, and viewers are showing their frustration by walking away from the series. So, the idea of losing two main characters could end up being a great thing for the story as a whole.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 Will Say Goodbye to Owen and Teddy

After 18 seasons and 12 seasons respectively, Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver will be leaving Grey’s Anatomy. Their characters will be written out during the Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 Finale, and according to Deadline, there are hints that they will get a happy ending.

After all, the two have been put through the wringer. On their wedding day, Owen found out that Teddy had an affair with Koracick. While the two married, tensions were high, and then Teddy’s backstory with a woman named Alison at the time of 9/11 led to more distrust and question over their relationship. Things eventually came to a head when Teddy asked to open their marriage, and while she couldn’t quite go through with it, Owen could.

They split up for a while and even signed divorce papers, and now they’re sneaking around and hooking up with each other again. It’s a tale as old as time for the two of them, and it has become repetitive and annoying.

With the loss of the two characters, more focus can be given to other characters on Grey’s Anatomy. Characters like Simone and Blue still need a lot more attention and growth, while Webber and Helm have almost been completely forgotten about. Interesting characters like Schmidt and Niko were written out in favor of these longer-standing series regulars, leading to disappointment and anger. So, now there is more room to focus on others who need it, as long as the focus isn’t wholly turned to Link and Jo, who have become the main focus during Grey’s Anatomy Season 22.

The problem is the writers need to change tactics. When Amelia went off on her sabbatical, there was hope that she would come back focused on work. Instead, the writers immediately put her into a new relationship, rushing head-first as she always has. It’s a “yawn” storyline that serves nothing to further Amelia’s development. If the writers can’t change things up, then losing Owen and Teddy is going to do little to improve the story.

We Always Knew This Was Likely

Grey’s Anatomy Season 23 hasn’t been confirmed yet, but just recently, there was word that it would likely happen. However, the episode count would be reduced and we would lose some series regulars. So, the latter is now happening, making way for a renewal to be confirmed. After all, it alleviates the budget issues, which we knew the large ensemble cast brings.

The Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 Finale will air on Thursday, May 7. That doesn’t leave a lot of time for the renewal to come through, but it’s sure to happen ahead of the Upfronts also in May.

Grey’s has the potential to be the show that it used to be, and the latest storyline with Katie proves that. Can the writers see some change now that Owen and Teddy won’t be a part of it?

Grey’s Anatomy airs on Thursdays at 10/9c on ABC.
