It’s that time of year when networks start to make some big cancellation and renewal decisions. I have my renewal scorecards, and its already time to update one, as FOX has delivered some exciting news for Best Medicine fans.
Just off the back of renewing Animal Control for a fifth season, FOX has decided that another season of the new feel-good medical drama is in order. Josh Charles’s Best Medicine will be back for a second season.
FOX Renews Best Medicine for Season 2
TV Insider delivered the exciting news, making it clear that Best Medicine Season 2 will have 12 episodes. This will likely mean that it remains part of the midseason, although FOX isn’t quite following traditional releases, with Murder in a Small Town only having eight episodes.
The renewal is definitely not surprising news, considering it is one of the top performers on the network when it comes to scripted content. The premiere pulled in 12.6 million viewers across the multiple platforms, and it’s in the top 2 highest-rated drama debuts of the season on the network, just behind Memory of a Killer.
If you haven’t watched it yet, because you’ve been worried about cancellation, now is the time to jump in. Best Medicine is based on the British series, Doc Martin, and follows Josh Charles as Dr. Martin Best. After moving to Port Wenn from Boston, he quickly struggles to fit in with the locals. However, he has to deal with them on a daily basis, as he becomes the general practitioner for the small town.
His attitude doesn’t fit in with the town, though, and that leads to some hilarious drama. The good news is they all learn to work together, and it helps that Martin prefers to be left alone. What’s curious is his blood phobia, which makes his job an interesting career choice.
The main cast includes Josh Charles, Abigail Spencer, Annie Potts, Josh Segarra, and Cree Cicchino.
When Could Best Medicine Season 2 Premiere?
With just 12 episodes planned for the second season, it does look possible that FOX is going to hold the show for the midseason. This allows for a strategic run without gaps in the season.
However, this is one of the biggest shows of the year. FOX will likely want to take advantage of that and push it to the fall. I’ll keep an eye on the May Upfronts, which is when the fall schedule is released, and I’ll share the details here as soon as we all get them.
Best Medicine currently airs Tuesdays at 8/7c on FOX and streams the following day on Hulu.
