All is not lost when it comes to comedy, as NBC has now made a positive decision about its last comedy on the bubble. The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins will get another shot.
We will still miss Stumble, but the decision to renew one more comedy — Happy’s Place and St. Denis Medical have both already been renewed for their third seasons — shows that this area of TV isn’t dead yet. After all, the comedy lineup has shrunk across the networks over the years.
The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins Quickly Made an Impression
There’s no doubt that the show was going to be a success with Tracy Morgan and Daniel Radcliffe behind it. There was also the power of the mockumentary form of storytelling, which has been growing in popularity over the last few years.
On top of all that, it’s ranked as the top scripted show on the network, just ahead of Chicago Fire in terms of average demo. This was helped by a special air time for the premiere episode, and while there was a sharp drop when it came to the second episode, the drops after that weren’t too bad.
However, NBC will need to think about the placement of the series for its second season. The success in the future relies on that.
A Chance to Break Away from the Stereotypes in Comedy
The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins has been a comedy that has offered refreshing storytelling, especially when it comes to the supporting women in the cast. Usually, we would see the ex and the current woman in the lead male’s life constantly fighting and bickering, but that’s not the case here. They respect and care for each other, just wanting to help the man they both love in their own way.
There’s also a healthy co-parenting relationship between Reggie and Monica. While they are divorced, they have been supportive parents to their son, Carmelo, and they have worked together to help him grow into a well-rounded young man. They also have a respect of their own, becoming friends with their manager-football personality relationship.
We also learn that Brina isn’t with Reggie for his money. She has her own side hustle and money. In fact, she could be the one bankrolling everyone! It’s a great way to show that the best people don’t have to show off their finances to know that they are a success.
We need more comedies like this, and so it’s even more important that NBC finds the perfect timeslot for The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins Season 2.
