Shortly after the Sheriff Country Season 1 Finale, showrunner Matt Lopez delivered some juicy details. He told Soaps all about the backstory.

It turns out that Eva was a young DEA agent on an undercover assignment to take down Wes Fox. She took on the identity of Sarah Berrnal, and she ended up falling in love for her target.

So, what happened? With that backstory, it’s hard to see how she could end up just walking away from the life that she had created. Sure, eventually, she would have known she needed to, but what sort of redemption arc is there?

I Need to Know How Eva Got So Involved on Sheriff Country

There are a few things that I’ll need Sheriff Country* Season 2 to delve right into when it comes to this backstory. Sure, now we know that Eva was undercover in Edgewater, but how did she end up getting so involved in Wes’s life?

She would have known the dangers of falling for her mark, and here it happened! At least, that’s what we’re being led to believe.

She wouldn’t have had a child with Wes if she weren’t in love with him, right? She would have done what was needed for the job. There has to be something much bigger, and we need to understand the feelings that she was going through.

I almost feel like we’ll need to spend a good episode that’s a complete flashback to tell us Eva’s story at that time.

Is There a Way to Redeem the Character?

Lopez knows that he will need to make Eva’s story sympathetic to the viewer. He knows that there will be people ready with the pitchforks to condemn her, and he needs to create a storyline that redeems her.

At the same time, it’s not easy to just dismiss everything that she’s done. It makes me more intrigued about Sheriff Country Season 2 than I initially was.

There’s only one way that I can see her character being redeemed, and that’s by her believing something happened to Mickey. Why else would she walk away from her daughter?

She could have taken her daughter with her, right? She could have allowed her daughter to believe that Wes had died, not her. So, what made her decide to walk away and choose her career?

There is a hint of her making this decision when she’s speaking with Mickey in the final Season 1 episode, sharing that she understands what it’s like to step away from someone you love. That would hint that she knew Mickey was fine and needed her mother.

While this is a soapy storyline, it also promises to be a heavy storyline. So, I’m here for it!

Sheriff Country* is available to stream on Paramount+ or you can buy the episodes digitally on Amazon.
