In Matt Webb Mitvoch’s Inside Line piece for the week, he shared that Brilliant Minds is still being shopped around. However, there is no word on whether there is hope or not.
I have to be a realist, right now. As much as I would love for more from the medical drama, I doubt that we’ll get to see more. There’s a cliffhanger coming at the end of the Brilliant Minds* Season 2 Finale, and it’s going to break us.
Why Brilliant Minds Likely Won’t Be Saved
As I say, I have to be a realist on this. It helps with preparing for the worst. Then if the show is saved, I can be happy in being wrong!
However, the series just hasn’t performed all that well in the linear ratings. It was the bottom of all the scripted shows on NBC, showing a large drop in viewership between the seasons. This is an indication that the viewers have checked out.
Sadly, the back half of the season has been so much stronger than the first half. However, the damage was already done, and it has led to too many people walking away and not wanting to sit through the Wolf mystery any longer.
And that’s what arguably did it. Look, we had a major mystery that felt more like some soapy plot device, and we lost two of the interns — and the two most interesting ones out of all of them! Van had his enhanced empathy, while there was a lot to delve into with Jacob, as he dealt with losing out on a career he loved and the fear of developing more serious health problems due to the concussions he suffered in his football career.
With such low viewership numbers in the U.S., it’s going to be much harder to get another network to pick it up. The streamers will want to see the international figures, and they don’t seem to be high enough to get a streamer involved. The fact that it wasn’t even being discussed as a potential Peacock Original for the third season indicates that the end is nigh.
So, we need to prepare for the worst. Brilliant Minds Season 2’s finale will air on July 1, 2026, and I do suspect that it will be the last.
