I think we’re getting used to seeing characters leaving Intelligence now, as each season of Chicago PD seems to see a loss of someone.

This season is bigger than previous ones, and I’m not all that surprised that we’ll see this shift. Atwater is walking away from his team, and in a way, it’s about time.

Look, let’s admit that Atwater was one of the most underused characters on the entire show. The only time he was really called upon was when it came to going undercover with the gangs. That was his thing, but even that became overused and disappointing. It was the same old storyline each and every time he became the focus.

Chicago PD Season 13 Seemed to Set Up Atwater’s Exit

In all honesty, I felt like Chicago PD* Season 13 was setting up for Atwater’s exit in the first place. He had that moment during the middle point of the season when he thought about leaving Chicago behind and going to Miami.

There was too much for him in Chicago, though. His dad is there, he has his tenants, and his job is important to him.

Yet, something was missing, and as soon as he found out that he was going to be a dad, that told me everything I needed to know. Atwater was always going to want to be in that child’s life, so of course, he’s going to leave!

Atwater Will Be In Some Season 14 Episodes

In some sort of good news, this exit isn’t happening between seasons. Atwater will get two or three episodes, so we’ll get to say goodbye to him.

I’m angry that we won’t get to see much time for a storyline to develop, but then, what do we expect when Chicago PD has forgotten about him so much already?

At least, we’ll get to see him make a decision to leave. At the end of Chicago PD Season 13, he and Tasha had discussed what their lives would look like together. It’s likely that they’ll leave Chicago together — will it be for Miami? That part is up for debate.

At least there is a built-in storyline. It’s not like when Kiara was suddenly written out between seasons with clearly much more story to tell.

Chicago PD* Season 14 premieres on Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 10/9c on NBC.
