If You Weren’t Planning on Watching Einstein and Are a Monk Fan, You May Change Your Mind!

I’ll admit that the moment Matthew Gray Gubler was cast as the lead on CBS’s Einstein, I was going to be seated. The new procedural won’t arrive until the midseason, but it looks like it could offer something every Elementary fan has needed.

Now, it’s just become one cast member better. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’s Tony Shalhoub has joined the series, and it brings us the Monk reunion we’ve needed.

Tony Shalhoub Will Play Einstein’s Father

This isn’t just some small guest star role, either. Shalhoub will play the father to Gubler’s character. TV Insider confirms that he will recur, which means he won’t be in every single episode, but that doesn’t rule out seeing plenty of him! The character’s name is Jack Einstein, while Gubler’s character is called Lewis.

It brings the Monk reunion we didn’t think we needed, as Einstein’s executive producers are Andy Breckman and Randy Zisk. Breckman created Monk, which starred Shalhoub as the titular character. There’s no doubt that the dramedy tone suits Shalhoub’s acting style.

What Is Einstein About?

The new CBS series follows Lewis, the great-grandson of the legendary Albert Einstein. He’s described as being “brilliant but directionless,” and he ends up having to work with a local police detective after his bad-boy antics get him into trouble with the law.

That detective is Teri, played by Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Melissa Fumero, and she needs Einstein’s help to solve some of the most puzzling cases that cross her desk.

The series was announced as being held for the midseason, which is often the case with the odd drama. There just isn’t room in the fall, and a midseason start can help give other shows a chance. With the casting, though, I’d argue that Einstein could have performed extremely well in the fall.

The episode count hasn’t yet been confirmed, but for a midseason freshman series, we’re expecting between 10 and 13 episodes.
