Call the Midwife Season 15 Is Setting Up the Death of a Beloved Character — And I’m Not Ready

Some character deaths are expected, but that doesn’t make them any easier. That’s going to be the case with Sister Monica Joan on Call the Midwife Season 15. It’s clear that the series is setting up for her death, and I’m not quite ready for it.

Sister Monica Joan has always been the heart of Nonnatus House. She offers a bright spark to any situation, but things have been difficult for the last few episodes. She doesn’t have the appetite she once had, and it’s clear that her energy is waning.

Sister Monica Joan Is Dying on Call the Midwife

Dr. Turner gave the grave diagnosis. Sister Monica Joan has chronic kidney disease. Her kidneys are no longer working as they should, and there is no cure for this. Age is taking her, and this is certainly a bittersweet thought.

Of course, we knew that Sister Monica Joan couldn’t live forever, but that doesn’t mean we want to say goodbye. It’s clear that we won’t get to see her on Call the Midwife Season 16, though. With some hope, we’ll see a younger version of her in the prequel series.

Accepting Life and Death on Call the Midwife

The series hasn’t been a stranger to some of the most devastating storylines. However, what it hasn’t really been able to offer is a look at how death can be peaceful. That’s something Call the Midwife promises to offer with the latest storyline.

Sister Monica Joan knows that she is dying. While she is sad to see her life come to an end, there is also a peace to it. Fred sits with her at the end of Call the Midwife Season 15 Episode 6, as they discuss life a little. I love seeing how connected Fred is to the nuns and midwives of Nonnatus House. He has a heart, and it’s so refreshing to have a man of this time so modern on the show.

In the end, living forever isn’t possible. Sister Monica Joan knows that, but that doesn’t mean she is ready to die at first. There are things she may feel have been left unfinished, but the more she thinks about it, the more she realizes that there is a peace in what’s to come next.

The next two episodes are surely not going to be easy. After all, I don’t see this death happening until the Call the Midwife Season 15 finale.

Call the Midwife airs on Sundays at 8/7c on PBS and streams on PBS Masterpiece on Prime Video and PBS Passport.
