House of the Dragon is no stranger to bringing devastation, and it feels like Rhaenyra’s side has faced more of it.
She’s lost her sons, Jace and Luc, now, and there was the loss of Rhaenys during House of the Dragon Season 2. Before that, Laena’s death led to the Greens getting their hands on the oldest and largest dragon in Westeros.
So, it feels only natural that she should end up with another major loss, right? There’s a lot of bad luck on her side. The end of the Battle of the Gullet saw Corlys go into the water, and now the search for him will start.
While House of the Dragon has made some major changes to the book storyline, there are some moments that need to remain the same. So, we need to turn to the story to see just what happens to the Sea Snake.
Corlys Survives in Fire & Blood
In the book by George R.R. Martin*, Corlys survives the Battle of the Gullet. His home in Driftmark is sacked and destroyed, and he does lose a third of his fleet, but he makes it out alive.
It’s a huge moment for Corlys, as he not only loses his home — a home that he built — but he loses all the treasures that he had gathered throughout his time sailing. At one point, he was richer than the Hightowers and the Lannisters!
On top of that, Spicetown is destroyed in the Battle of the Gullet. This was one of the towns that was created thanks to Corlys’ position as the Lord of the Tides, so while it does seem to be a victory for him overall, there is a lot of loss.
After this, Corlys stood by Rhaenyra for some time. He offered his advice, not that Rhaenyra would always take it, but eventually, he ends up being a traitor to the crown.
Eventually, out of all the characters, he is the one who is able to live into his older years. After all, he is able to stand his ground with either side and helps to bring an end to the Dance of the Dragons.
Will Corlys Survive on House of the Dragon?
Now the question is whether Corlys will survive the Battle of the Gullet on House of the Dragon*. This is a man who many have wanted dead, but he’s always survived. He’s not someone who can be taken down easily.
While the show has made some changes, I don’t suspect that this will be one of them. Remember that Corlys plays a larger role in the end of the Dance of the Dragons, and it would be hard to give that role to another character.
So, I fully expect Corlys to survive.
